BEAUTY WITH A PURPOSE

The President of the Miss World Organization, Julia Morley, coined the motto "Beauty With A Purpose" and over the past twenty-five years, more than $400 million USD has been raised for children's charities across the globe, helping hundreds of thousands of those in need. MISS BARBADOS WORLD and SFC INTERNATIONAL are committed to this principle, and as a continuance of this mandate,

to raise funds and awareness by associations with organizations that benefit women, children or persons afflicted; Miss Barbados World’s Charity of Choice is The National Hiv/Aids Commission- Children with Aids.

THE EXPANDED RESPONSE TO HIV/AIDS

AIDS is the greatest plague of the modern era. In less than twenty years, this pandemic has already claimed the lives of more than 20 million men, women and children worldwide. In Barbados, it is estimated that once every three days someone dies as a result of an AIDS-related illness. Our island is beginning to feel the impact of this disease as it has started to erode the developmental gains which we have accomplished over the past three decades.

In an effort to meet the challenges posed by this pandemic, Barbados is mounting a coordinated expanded response involving the governmental, non-governmental and wider private sector communities. It will see these entities coming together to form strategic partnerships to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Prevention will be the hallmark of the expanded response and it will be delivered through a sustained and coordinated information, education and communication campaign involving all Ministries.

The MISS BARBADOS WORLD "Beauty With A Purpose" Award was presented for the first time in 2005 and is now an exciting and innovative part of the contest. As part of MBW’s commitment to the principle of Beauty With A Purpose, the contestants have participated in fundraising efforts for The Barbados Cancer Society-Children with Cancer; The Barbados Council for the disabled- Children with disabilities; The Learning Centre; The Caribbean Dyslexia Association and Centre- Children with Dyslexia; The National HIV/ Aids Commission- Children with Aids and The HOPE Foundation - Children with Sickle Cell Anemia and Lupus.

Beauty With A Purpose Award: An exciting and fantastic innovation from our contest, this award is one of the most prestigious awards to be won in Barbadian contest history.
